Awards: This committee serves to ensure that the organization continues to recognize psychiatrists who are doing outstanding work in a variety of areas. The committee is tasked with development of a timeline for award nominations, selection of recipients, and working with staff on the presentation of awards at the conferences.
Child & Adolescent: This ad-hoc committee was formed as a specialized work group dedicated to advising the organization on policy and advocacy efforts as they relate to the mental health needs of Black youth.
Communications and Social Media: This committee is focused on increasing the visibility of the organization and brand building. The committee oversees the social media internship program and works to enhance the BPA social media presence. This committee responds to current events, responds to journalist requests, manages the organization newsletter, and is the driving force in development and managing the list of content experts within the organization.
Conference: This committee allows members of the organization to have direct input into the planning of the organization's two annual conferences. This committee will focus on all non-scientific related programming and will work closely with the executive director.
Constitution and Bylaws: This committee is charged with maintaining the integrity of the organization through its constitution and bylaws. The committee is tasked with vetting member suggestions for changes in the constitution and bylaws document and bring those to the board for a vote if deemed appropriate. They will also create and oversee distribution of a ballot for members to vote on suggested changes to the document.
Finance: This committee, tasked with providing financial oversight to the organization, serves under the leadership of the Treasurer.
Governmental Affairs: This committee is focused on advancing relevant local, statewide, and federal legislation, policy and funding that enhances equitable treatment of mental health and substance abuse disorders, collaborating with other stakeholders to amplify our collective voices. The committee is tasked with development of a strategic plan, identification of relevant stakeholders, and ongoing inquiry about current legislative activities.
Membership: Under the direction of the Secretary, the membership committee is tasked with processing memberships into the organization. Tasks might include: revision of membership application and review of members whose dues are in arrears as a service to staff in obtaining essential information as to whereabouts, hardship, and other pertinent data.
Research and Medical Education: This committee is focused on efforts to achieve the organizational mission of teaching, research, and service. This committee is tasked with pairing BPA mentors with mentees, connecting BPA with entities that work to increase the pool of Black medical students and future psychiatrists, and the screening of research opportunities.
Scientific Program: This committee is tasked with oversight of the scientific program for any BPA conferences, symposiums, or other educational sessions. The committee manages the application for CME, posts all calls for papers, reviews submissions, and selects which presentations will present at the BPA meetings. The committee also provides additional support onsite at the conferences.
Sports Psychiatry: This ad-hoc committee was formed as a specialized work group dedicated to advising the organization on policy and advocacy efforts as they relate to the mental health needs of Black athletes.
Think Tank/Future Focus and Strategy: This ad-hoc committee serves as the voice of the next era of the BPA and will drive future policy and planning. This group will focus on honoring the legacy of this organization while moving towards the current and future needs of Black psychiatry including digital health, evolving residency needs, and systemic equity.
